Madanfo Project and Radefoundation announce a call for entries for the "Timeabu Kindergarten" Architecture Competition. The competition aims to create a place where the youngest children of Timeabu can take classes.

Program

Classrooms for preschool education. There are currently more than 100 students attending preschool education classes under a tree. It is necessary the construction of three classrooms in total: Nursery, Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2.

Each classroom must be able to accommodate between 35-40 students.

The competition is open to candidates both students of professionals of architecture, design, engineering, or people involved to design or construction projects, from all around the world.

Prizes

The jury will evaluate all the projects that complies with the regulation.

1st Prize: Select their planification propose for the new classrooms. Construction of the Kindergarten 2 in Timeabu, Ghana.

2nd Prize: Construction of the Kindergarten 1 classroom

3rd Prize: Construction of the Nursery room.

Q1: Should the design of the furniture must be taken into account (teacher and students table, storage space..) as a part of the design of the classrooms?

A1: It is necessary to have a sense of the space, so the placement of some furniture will be appreciated.  The furniture does not necessary need to be designed for this specific project, but it could be part of the design of the project as a whole. 

Q2:  In the program it is mentioned that there must be a 4-6 sqm for storage, is this area integrated into the existing buildings or should it be integrated into the new design of the classrooms?

A2: This space must be part of the new design. It could be integrated into the classrooms or be an isolated space. That is part of the strategy of the design.

Q3: Do all the three winner teams get to build their design?

A3: The competition has two main objectives: 

1-The design of the set-up of the new classrooms

2-The design of the classrooms. 

The project of the winner team of the First Prize will be chosen for the location and planning of the different classrooms, as well as the design of one of the classrooms. 

Both designs can be slightly changed with the recommendations from the Organization to fit better into the village and it’s context.

The Second and Third Prize will get to build one classroom with their design, that will be adapted in order to achieve the continuity of the architecture and its context.

Q4: In the brief is written that the design proposal has to be well integrated in the current school ground and with the existing buildings. What do you mean with this?

A4: In the briefing it says that the design has to be well integrated with the existing constructions. With this we want to say that the architecture has to be integrated. It is up to you if you design it similar, totally different, place it far or close to the existing school creating different spaces or whatever you want to do. It is up to the design team.

We provide pictures and videos of the existing school and we will soon be sharing a file with the dimensions of the existing buildings into the Dropbox folder. 

Q5:The price of the mud/clay/adobe bricks is not in the material prices. 

A5: In this area of Ghana it is difficult to find adobe bricks to buy, but not impossible. We will try to get the most accurate price for it. 

A suggestion is that the bricks are built at the site with the local material and techniques. But it is of course necessary to have the knowledge about how to do it. 

Q6. What is exactly the nursery? What happens in this classroom?

A6: We haven't specify anything about what should be inside the classrooms, but in the nursery there is normally a space to play and also some chairs and tables for the kids to sit. 

Q7: Are we allowed to use the whole site or should we focus on the marked area?

A7: You should focus on the red marked area.

Q8.What is the range of age for the kids attending the kindergarten and the nursery?

A8: This depends very much in the personal situation of each kid. Normally we would say that in the Nursery classroom there are kids between 2 and 4-5 years ols. And in the Kindergarten classrooms there are kids between 4 and 8 years old. Sometimes you will also see kids that are 10 year old.

Q9: What kind of terrain there is in the site? And in the surroundings? 

A9: The type of soil on which the school is located and the surrounding area is clayey. Those are the main characteristics of all soils in this area.

Q10: What is the use of the surrounding buildings of the project area?

A10: The buildings around the marked area are the Primary school

Q11: Is the prize winning also monetary?

A11: The winning prize is not monetary. The winning project have the possibility to build in one of the communities in rural Ghana and the project leaders will have to find their founds. 

The NGOs that organize the competition will help to the development of the project and will assist to everything is needed there and before. Both organizations have experience with this type of competitions and projects. There is a lot of ideas and suggestions we can help with.

On site there will be free accommodation for the project leaders. The prices for the rest of the team for accommodation and food are symbolic and will just cover the food.

The competition is held by two NGOs which aim is to help rural communities in Ghana to get access to education. 

All the money that is earn with the subscriptions goes to the development of winner projects in Ghana and both Madanfo Project and RadefFoundatuion don´t earn anything with the competition and are working completely for free and as volunteers. 

Q12: Is it necessary to put a water tank into the project?

A12: It is not specify into the program that a water tank is needed. Is a good element to have in a school and in a village like Timeabu, so the students can get easy access to drinkable water.

It is however an expensive feature that would need to be included into the budget. 

For water collection you can use the solution you find best. It could be a simpler one or a more complex one. You can take as a reference the ones used in Africa, but is not a must

There are many options to have into consideration.

Q13: What are the schedules in the school?

A13: School in Timeabu start in September and finish in June. School hours are from 7am until 2.30pm

Q14. Is the building site considered a flat surface? 

A14: It is actually not a flat surface. But for the competition we suggest you consider it as a flat surface and afterwards the project or the terrain should be adjusted. 

Q15: What is the relationship between the three single classrooms? are there any functions that are used in common?

A15: The three classrooms make the Kindergarten. It is up to the design team and their strategy to combine the classrooms, put the separate or locate them in a different way. 

Q16: Is there a need for further secondary spaces like toilets, sleeping room, teachers room, first-aid-room?

A16: No, this is not included into the program of the competition

Q17: Are there any dangerous animals that should be considered in the design of the architecture?

A17: There are snakes, scorpions and spiders. You could consider it for the design of the architecture, but is not mandatory to do so. The classroom should be able to close.

Q18.What is the height of the existing buildings in the school?

A18: The height of the buildings is 4 meters
